Meghan Oberle, Vocalist
Born and raised in Sylvania, Ohio. Graduate of Notre Dame Academy. Studied vocals with Wendy Wisnewski
for six years and participated in choirs and productions throughout high school. Meghan was invited to sing with the
Night Session Big Band after landing the lead of Polly Baker in St. Francis De Sales Crazy for You. Currently
studying Recreational Therapy at the University of Toledo. Sings at church, plays guitar, and writes original
songs outside of school, work, dance, and performing as the newest member of the Night Session Big Band!
Xavier Smith, Alto Sax
From Dudley, NC. Choir Director for 11 years at Toledo Public Schools and Band Director for 4 yrs. Toledo Public Schools.
Graduate of Bowling Green State U. Served for 10 years as the Director of Instrumental Music at St. Johns Jesuit High School,
and teaches sax, flute and clarinet in the Toledo area.
Denny Garvin, Alto Sax - Clarinet - Flute
Denny started playing clarinet when he was nine years old. He picked up alto sax and flute in high school. He was a member of Toledo Public Schools’ All-City High School Jazz Band,1977-79, under the leadership of Floyd “Candy” Johnson. He has been playing at every opportunity, since. Denny has degrees from Hocking College (1981) and The University of Toledo (1993). He has recently retired from the City of Toledo, Division of Parks, Recreation and Forestry where he served as Commissioner.
Jeff Shriner, Tenor Sax
Started on tenor sax in grade school, picked up flute in senior year of HS
and then to Bowling Green State University lab band on tenor
with mentor Candy Johnson! Actively playing with many bands in the Toledo area including the house band at
Rusty’s Jazz Club.
Nate Kester, Tenor Sax
A native to Rochester New York, Nate has been playing the saxophone ever since he could get his hands on one. Nate has been trained in both classical and jazz has worked with many teachers over the years most notably Doug Stone tenor man of the Maynard Ferguson and the Big Bop Nouveau, and now studies with both Pete Mills of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, and David Bixler of the Chico O'Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra and Auction Project. Nate has been a part of Greece Olympia High Jazz Band and Symphonic bands, The Eastman Youth Jazz Orchestra, and NYSSMA All- County and All-State Jazz Orchestras, and has headed a few of his own ensembles. He now is pursuing a degree in Music Education with a minor in Jazz Studies at Bowling Green State University.
Jonathan Wolff, Baritone Sax
Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. Switched from alto to baritone sax in 6th grade. Performed with the high school jazz band at SJJ and joined Night Session junior year.
Attended BGSU as an aviation studies major. Currently works as a flight instructor at the Bowling Green Flight Center.
Dave Backar, Trombone
Plays with Monroe Community Concert Band and many other bands throughout the region.
Mike Bayes, Trombone
Began playing trombone in grade school and continued through high school under the
direction of Don Haxton and Sam Szor. Joined the 555th ANG Band in 1974 performing
with the band world wide retiring as the Band Superintendent in 2007. Continued studies
in trombone performance include 5 years with TSO Principle Trombonist, Garth
Simmons. Degreed in Electronics Engineering from the University of Toledo, and is
employed as the 911 Manager with Lucas County Emergency Services. Also performs
with the Monroe County Community College Band and area musicals. Mike resides in
Temperance, MI with his wife, Sara.
Ben Wolke, Trombone
Played trombone in the St. John's Jazz Machine, UT Wind Ensemble, UT Jazz Big Band, UT Orchestra, Toledo Wind Orchestra, both of the UT athletic bands, and took
instruction from TSO player Dan Harris. Ben also took part in honor bands throughout high school and went back to instruct for the district 1 honors band.
Ben continues to play with multiple groups in Toledo and instructs the Bedford Marching Band.
Craig Schaar, Bass Trombone
Attended Capital University in Jazz Performance.
Graduate of Hocking College. Employed by the City of Toledo, Dept. of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry.
Plays with Monroe Community Concert Band.
Brad Behrendt, Trumpet
Originally from Vermilion, Ohio. Graduated from the University of
Toledo in Computer Science and Engineering. Played in various musicals, symphonic bands, jazz bands,
and marching bands throughout high school and college. Also performs with the Maumee Community Band, different brass ensembles, and area musicals.
Fred Mahler, Trumpet
Born and raised in New York and classically trained on trumpet through high school.
Received Engineering degree in metallurgy from New York University and has worked in the Toledo area in automotive,
aerospace, and fluid power industries since 1972. Musical avocation has included symphonic orchestra, community band,
brass ensemble, big band, and Broadway musical pit orchestras.
Mike Machcinski, Trumpet
Served with the 555th Air Force Band of the Ohio Air National Guard in the capacity of instrumentalist, vocalist, arranger,
and finally band superintendent over a 28 year career, retiring in 1998. A member of various additional musical groups over the years,
Mike also plays in a polka band and St. Michael's Lutheran Church brass quintet. Retiring from Chrysler Jeep in 2008, he presently
resides with his wife and children in Lambertville Michigan.
Larry Cook, Trumpet
A native of Toledo, Larry graduated from the University of Toledo with a degree in Music Education. Throughout his high school and college years,
Larry studied with Mr. Bernard Sanchez (Professor of Trumpet at the University of Toledo). Larry is a former member of the Toledo Youth Orchestra,
University of Toledo Orchestra, University of Toledo Faculty Brass Quintet, Toledo Symphony Orchestra and the Toledo Symphony Brass Quintet.
Larry toured with the American Wind Symphony, performing with guest artist, jazz trumpet Dizzie Gillespie. Larry has also studied with Frank Kaderabek (former
principal trumpet with the Detroit Symphony). Larry currently studies privately with Mr. William Campbell (Professor of Trumpet at the University of Michigan).
Larry continues to perform as a member of the Maumee Community Band, Sylvania Community Orchestra, Skip Turner Jazz Band, and various musicals and churches.
Larry lives in Maumee, Ohio with his wife Kaye.
Linda Sankovich, Piano
Classically trained on the piano since age 5.
Graduated from the University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Music degree, having studied 5 yrs with Frances Renzi.
Taught private piano lessons for 15 yrs. Now very active playing piano and keyboard for church, numerous high school musicals and choirs.
Was Music Director/Pianist for Toledo Repertoire Theater production of “Hats”, and Vocal Director/Pianist for “A Christmas Carol”.
Originally from Toledo, Ohio now resides in Perrysburg, Ohio.
Eric Alexius, Percussion
New Orleans, LA and moved to Ann Arbor, MI at age 9. Took an interest in drums
at age 11 after a jam session held in his dad’s basement. Played his first gig
at age 15 with the Carl Alexius Quartet. Graduated EMU with a Bachelor’s degree
in Music Education and now lives in Monroe, MI where he owns and operates The
Alexius Group software development company. Eric is married with two daughters
and has enjoyed playing in a number of area bands including the Monroe Community
Concert Band, the Monroe Big Band, the Ann Arbor based Ambassadors Big Band, and
the Garden City Big Band Express.
Adam Behrendt, String Bass
Adam has performed as a sub for Night Session
for several years and is now their full time bass player. Studied with Aaron Keaster
of the TSO. Played in Jazz Band and Symhony Strings at Perrysburg High School, as
well as honors and regional orchestras in the area. Also has played with the Toledo Youth
Symphony Orchestra. Currently studying Music Education at Bowling Green State University.
